Designer Stuart wins British fashion award
CARLISLE designer Stuart Vevers is the toast of the fashion world after being named Accessory Designer of the Year at the 2006 British Fashion Awards.
Stuart, creative designer at Mulberry, was honoured at the awards which are considered the Oscars of the industry.
The 32yearold former Trinity School pupil rubbed shoulders with the likes of Vivienne Westwood during the glittering bash at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Thursday night.
Giles Deacon, a friend of Stuart's, received the top honour of the night Designer of the Year.
Stuart's mother Barbara, a former window dresser and now a carer who lives in Lowry Hill, said: "Stuart rang late on Thursday night. I don't know what time it was I'd gone to bed with my mobile phone.

Fashion is a family affair for Stuart. His cousin Jonathan Kelsey is a top shoe designer who learned the trade at Jimmy Choo.
The pair, who were born less than a month apart, were in the same class at Trinity School and both completed a fashion foundation course at the Cumbria Institute of the Arts.
Tutor Jan Goodey is course leader of the foundation diploma.
She was a tutor when the two men were on the course in the early 1990s.
She said: "It is absolutely fantastic news. Congratulations to him.
"Stuart was a nice young man who worked very, very hard and was completely focused on what he wanted to do and achieve. I didn't teach him but I remember he was completely focused on fashion back then."
Jonathan, 33, went to Central St Martin's while Stuart studied fashion at the University of Westminster.
Stuart has also worked for Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton.
Their mothers Barbara Vevers and Suzanne Kelsey are twin sisters and say their sons' talents come from their own mother Edna.
Barbara said: "They influenced each other but we think they got it all from their grandmother Edna Murray, our mum. She was a dressmaker and was the costume maker for the musical society."
